VOX 6: Classical Concert with Phaedra Ensemble

The final concert in the 2018 VOX series sees Phaedra Ensemble explores ideas of place, nationhood and belonging through works inspired by the human voice.

Programme:
Jamie Hamilton - 47 Short Texts About America
Kevin Volans - Dancers on a Plane
Neil Luck - Phantasy
Antonia Barnett-McIntosh - New commission
Laurie Anderson - O Superman
(arr. J. Hamilton & Phaedra Ensemble)

Tickets - £8 in advance/ £10 on the door

We’re excited to be working with two of our favourite composers again. Neil Luck and Phaedra violinist Chihiro Ono present their collaboration Phantasy, with Japanese pop vocal-synth avatar Hatsune Miku, in performance for the first time. We’re also premiering a new commission by Antonia Barnett-McIntosh for speaking string quartet.

Kevin Volans' Dancers on a Plane, named after the painting by Jasper Johns, was originally written and recorded as the soundtrack to Deborah Amy’s documentary Plane-song. This concert version brings acoustic string quartet together with field recordings of natural found sounds from Volans former homeland of South Africa.

The concert opens with Jamie Hamilton’s kaleidoscopic multi-media performance 47 Short Texts About America. The constantly evolving work draws from all manner of US related media, from video games to Alex Jones to the seduction of a porn star by a reality TV presenter...

Finishing The series singer Jamie Doe joins the ensemble once again to perform a new arrangement of Laurie Anderson’s icon 0 Superman.
